In Stop Motion, physical processes and handmade work are essential. That is why most effects take place on set and require good planning and a solid foundation from the production stage, while visual effects are only a complement and not the only resource for solving a scene.
Amelia presented a particularly interesting challenge by involving ways of bringing magical elements into the physical world, combining practical resources with post-production tools.
In the workshop, we will explore one of the methods we found to accomplish this. We will explain the process from creating the concept art for an effect to its conception on set, analyzing how an idea can go from a sketch to a physical proposal and later be integrated into a stop motion scene.
The workshop program consists of 3 blocks:
- Introduction: what FX are and the importance of stylization and concept art in their development.
- From concept art to set: Different ways of taking a design from paper to production will be explored, as well as how to transform a 2D animation into a 3D model ready to be printed and, subsequently, how to bring the result to the set to be animated and physically integrated into the production.
- Practical exercise: The material we will work with will be footage of one of Amelia's FX. Using this material, participants will learn to composite the final modeled result into a physical scene, exploring the challenges involved in integrating digital elements with a stop motion production, such as lighting, shadows, perspective, and interaction with the environment.
